Training a Dachshund – Some Useful Tips

Training a dachshund can be a challenge because while these dogs are not aggressive, they can be very energetic. Dachshunds are small dogs characterized by their distinctive long bodies and short stubby legs. Dachshunds were bred purely as toy dogs, meaning they were never meant to do any work. So when we talk of training a dachshund, what we mean is being well-behaved and not nipping at strangers. Dachshunds have a high metabolism like most small dogs. So don’t give them any high sugar foods. This will only cause them to become more active. They have a tendency to run wildly around the house, usually with their favorite toys in their mouths. If there are any strangers in the house, they will nip at their legs, try to get them involved in their games. This can be a little uncomfortable to strangers.

The main concern in training a dachshund is to quiet it down. Dachshunds can be bratty and the owner should make them calm and obedient. You should start when they are quite young. Good training, if started when they are quite young will be more effective compared to trying to alter the behavior of an already grown up dog. So start early. Be gentle but firm and use a commanding tone of voice to let them know who is boss. Crate training is also more effective if the dog is familiar to the crate since a very young age. It won’t feel like a cage, it will feel like a home. But try no tot confine the dog for too long in the crate.

And regarding toilet training a dachshund, they have a tendency to urinate and defecate frequently in small amounts. They should be trained to do it outside. Take them to a spot outside or have a little pan. Take them to the spot after meals or whenever you feel they need to go. This could take a little patience until they learn to associate the spot with their toilet business. Make sure you change the litter regularly or the soil should be cleaned if it is an outside spot. They won’t go if it is too dirty.

And while training a dachshund, also play some games as this will not only help create bonding between you and the dog, this will also allow you to train the dog to follow commands. Play games that this small dog can be comfortable with. You cannot toss the Frisbee with a dachshund. And teach the dog some tricks. You can train a dachshund to shake hands. Teach it to lift its paw, whenever someone offers an outstretched hand. Nudge the dog slightly behind the front paw initially. Eventually, the dog will learn how to respond.

Trick should be taught while training a dachshund. You can teach the dog how to stand and roll over. And regarding interaction with other people, train the dog not to bite strangers. Pull it away while scolding it, it will learn that this is wrong.
